ASBESTOS REMOVAL

Grace has introduced a product that it says is the first to chemically destroy asbestos in installed fireproofing.  The process is reported to be only 33% of the cost of conventional techniques. The really interesting feature of this technology is that it uses a foam delivery system. The foam contains an inorganic acid, as well as a fluorine source, which are used to degrade magnesium and silica-containing asbestos components.  The product is commercially available.  The patent covering this technology has been issued:

Block, J., U.S. Patent 5,743,841, April 28, 1998
Foam Composition for Treating Asbestos Containing Materials and Method of Using Same

Additional information on this technology can be obtained from Roger Milton at Grace.
